I was paid ₹6/word for my first gig.

Hard to believe, right? Well, let me explain…

For my first client, I wrote a lead gen email with 2 variations.

For ₹4000.

I was over the moon!

I mean, ₹4000 was not game-changing money, but I thought, “hell, it’s only two emails, so why not?”

And honestly, it was.

Delivering the final draft, I did two 300 words emails.

Now, if you look at that, yes—essentially, it’s roughly ₹6/word per email, but that’s not the complete story.

I had to:

-Revise the draft at least thrice
-Think for hours for a great hook & a subject line
-Research deeply about my client’s clientele
-Provide multiple copy options
-Constantly swap words to tweak voice & tone

And whatnot.

It took me 2.5 weeks, start to finish.

But do I regret it? Hell no!

I think I charged what I felt was right & got what I wanted.

Not to mention, it was my first gig.

But that ₹/word mindset got me thinking I was paid wayyyy above my pay grade.

But it wasn’t.

It was fair, not expensive.

Get out of the per word mindset, especially if you’re in copy.

Doesn’t matter whether you’re being paid nicely or nastily.

Don’t attach your value to JUST WORDS.

You’re always more than that.

How do you like to price your projects?
